How to Define Your Brand Vision

Brand strategy is one of those things that sounds elusive, so let’s define it before you hear why it should matter to you.

how to define your brand vision

Brand strategy is a long term plan for how your business–your brand–will develop. A well-defined strategy will encompass all areas of your business from strategic decisions like who you’ll work with to how you’re different than the competition. It’s your roadmap for how you’re going to get from point A to point B.

Hearing that, you’re probably in the same book as me, if not on the same page.

How do you get where you want to go if you don’t know where you’re going? (Whew, that was confusing! Let’s try that again…)

If you don’t know where you’re going, how will get there? And if you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you arrive?

This is why a brand vision could matter to you. For the record, I really wanted to write “should” there, but I’m trying to be less judgy. (Is it working?)

Part of brand strategy is getting a vision for where you are going.

Where do you see yourself in three years? Five? How will you feel doing day-to-day tasks? What will your workspace look like? How many clients will you be working with and how does that make you feel? Your vision is a combination of these things.

When you have a vision, you’ve got the start of your brand strategy. To truly turn that vision into a workable strategy that stays with you long term rather than changes year by year–or worse!–month by month, you’ve got to anchor it.

How? You need to define your strategy with the three following elements.

  • Who are you?
  • Who do you serve?
  • How do you serve them?

You need to be able to write an answer to each of those three elements clearly, concisely. That means 1-2 sentences.

You also should be able to elaborate with PAGES of written info on each.

If you can do each of those things, you’re golden.

If you can’t you need to set aside some time to determine if you can figure it out on your own, or if you need to get outside guidance from someone like me.

Remember, no one will follow you if you don’t know where you’re going.
